India is slated to shift to Bharat Stage VI (BS- VI) norms from 01st April 2020. As a result of this decision of the government Maruti Suzuki the largest stake holder in the automobile industry in India has decided to phase out its Diesel range of vehicles. According to the company the price gap between Diesel and Petrol fuel is not so significant to induce the customer to pay a higher price for the Diesel engines. As it is the price of the Diesel vehicles is already higher compared to the Petrol ones this will increase further by about Rs. 1.30 lakhs per vehicle with the onset of the new norms. As a result, Maruti Suzuki has decided to shift to Petrol and Hybrids only. This decision is also likely to push for faster development and launch of fully electric vehicles from Maruti Suzuki. The company already has its Wagon R electric on the roads. Come April 2020 we can expect other launches too from the company. In a nutshell the new norms are most likely to aid faster adoption of electric vehicles in India.
